Neutrogena was founded by Emanuel Stolaroff in Los Angeles, California. In 1930, Natone, Neutrogena’s original name, supplied several beauty salons and is often associated in bringing glamour to the film industry. By 1940, Natone began its expansion and catered to retail market.

It was in 1945 that Stolaroff went for a business trip in Europe to meet with Dr. Edmond Fromont, a cosmetic chemist. Dr. Fromont’s unique formula created a mild, clear soap that washes off quickly without leaving any soap residues. After 11 minutes of rinsing with this soap, it can normalize the skin’s pH level.

Stolaroff believed in the product’s credibility that he decided to sell Neutrogena in the US. In setting the goals to Neutrogena’s expansion, Stolaroff also managed to widen its distribution channel in department stores and drug stores.

In 1962, Neutrogena Soap was then changed to Neutrogena Corporation. In 1967, vital member in the Neutrogena family Lloyd Cotsen became president. He made positive changes in the Neutrogena Corporation and grew the company’s business ventures. Its association with dermatologists gave this company a fair advantage to compete with other beauty corporations.

Its gaining acceptance from the medical profession prompted Neutrogena to focus on producing mild, safe and effective skin care products. By 1973, Neutrogena went public and produced a hair care line in 1973.

Now, its expansion to more than 70 countries marked Neutrogena’s credibility in producing the best skin and hair care products.

Neutrogena also gathered prestigious awards from renowned magazines and competitions. In 2007, Allure Editor’s Choice was awarded to Neutrogena’s Acne Stress Control Line as the “Best Acne Treatment”. In 2008, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock won the “SPF/ Sunblock” Reader’s Choice Beauty Awards in 2008.
