It was in 1872 that Shiseido started in a Japanese district called Ginza, a Western-style pharmacy in Tokyo. This is the time where herbal medicine is a standard treatment against any ailments. Arinobu Fukuhara, founder of Shiseido was not pleased with the way medicines were distributed. At age 23, Arinobu aimed to separate medicinal and dispensary ways in Japan.

Shiseido’s name originated from the Chinese text “Yi Jing”. The company’s vision of Shiseido entails “Oriental style with Western learning” that diversifies the two cultures together in their product lines. The thought of running a pharmacy with this kind of concept is challenging to Arinobu. Eventually, Shiseido became a trustworthy pharmacy.

It was during 1897 that Shiseido stepped into producing cosmetic products with Eudermine. This formula was researched by Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai to develop high quality cosmetic items. Unlike the products marketed at that time, Eudermine came from the Greek word that means ‘skin’. This was sold off in a magnificently looking bottle with an inscription “Shiseido’s Red Water’. Despite the repackaging and improvement of this product, it remains a best-selling product up to this day.

1997 marked Shiseido’s 100th anniversary where Eudermine Global was simultaneously released to Japan and overseas in collaboration with Serge Lutens, a French image maker.
